Alaska Collection

One of Alaska’s hidden gems, Talkeetna is often overlooked, but it’s well worth a trip of its own. Home to unparalleled views of Denali (also known as Mount McKinley) on a clear day, this quirky frontier town has long been a gathering place for mountaineers, artists and adventurers.

Whether you're looking to venture into the wilderness, enjoy local food and hospitality or stroll down Main Street to discover the town’s rich history, Talkeetna offers endless opportunities to explore.

Better yet, it’s easy to reach. Just two hours north of Anchorage by car or train, it’s the ideal place to spend a weekend away. From flightseeing and jet boating to local dining and historic sights, here's how to make the most of three days in Talkeetna.

Friday

Arrival: Drive or take the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage for a scenic journey to Talkeetna. The Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge shuttle will pick you up right at the depot. After checking in, drop your bags and head to Base Camp Bistro for a casual meal featuring Alaska favorites like elk meatloaf, fish and chips, and salmon burgers.

Evening: Before turning in, stretch your legs on the lodge's 5.8 miles of maintained trails and stop by the iconic viewing deck, complete with viewing scopes for a closer look at Denali and the Alaska Range. Then settle into the lobby, where oversized windows frame the mountains and summer daylight seems reluctant to fade.

Saturday

Morning: Start your day at the on-site Mount Hunter Coffee Co. with a freshly roasted coffee and grab-and-go breakfast. Then hop on the guest shuttle to downtown Talkeetna.

Stroll Main Street, browse local shops and stop into Aurora Dora's Gallery before soaking in the history and character of this quirky climber's town, a longtime gateway to Denali expeditions.

Afternoon: Stop by Homestead Kitchen for a hearty Alaska-style lunch with dishes like seafood chowder, Homestead elk pie and pollock fish sandwiches, before heading out on an adventure.

Choose a jet boat tour with Mahay Jet Boat Adventures on the Susitna River, narrated by trained naturalists, and keep an eye out for local wildlife along the way. Or take to the skies on a flightseeing tour with K2 Aviation or Talkeetna Air Taxi, where you can soar over the Ruth Gorge, land on a glacier and take in the immense scale of Denali.

Evening: Head back to the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge and treat yourself to dinner at Foraker Restaurant. Their prix fixe, multi-course menu features seasonal Alaska ingredients, creating a memorable dining experience paired with spectacular views of Denali and the Alaska Range. Top-notch service and an award-winning wine list make it the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.

Sunday

Morning: Start your day with one last meal at the lodge. Base Camp Bistro opens bright and early at 6 a.m. with favorites like yogurt bowls, breakfast sandwiches and bagels with lox, so you can enjoy one more hit-the-spot meal with mountain views before checking out.

Afternoon: If time allows, head back downtown for one last stroll along Main Street. Grab a baked treat from the Talkeetna Roadhouse and if you haven’t yet, make sure to stop by Nagley's Store — once home to Stubbs, the town's famous feline mayor.

Before heading home, walk to Riverfront Park at the end of Main Street, where three glacial rivers converge beneath Denali views. Take a walk along the river's gravel bars and enjoy a final taste of Talkeetna before boarding the Alaska Railroad or driving back to Anchorage.

Tip: Have more time? Talkeetna makes a great stop between Anchorage and Denali National Park. Continue your journey north with a stay at Denali Cabins, located about two hours from Talkeetna.

Prepare to fall in love with Talkeetna this season. First things first, book your stay at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.
