Things to do in Sitka

Flanked by the Pacific Ocean and majestic mountain peaks, Sitka is a picturesque Inside Passage community that speaks to the quintessential Alaskan destination infused with its attractive wildlife, scenery and unique meld of Russian-European and Native cultures.

Originally inhabited by the Native Tlingit Indians in 1808 following a famous battle, Sitka became the capital of Russian America. From architecture to dance, the town's Russian influence continues to live on. Well-worth a visit, St. Michael's Cathedral is the town's focal point with its onion-shaped domes and golden crosses and is the first Russian church constructed in America. Downtown Sitka is home to several historic buildings, art galleries and fine gift shops.

Mount Edgecomb, a dormant volcano backs this scenic town with a graceful cone akin to Mount Fuji in Japan. Nature lovers can explore the superb hiking trails in a lush rainforest surrounding the city or spot wonderful marinelife such as whales, seals and sea lions.
