On an island off the coast of Alaska, there's a warm little wilderness lodge loaded with serenity and warmth. It's surrounded by mist-covered peaks and soaring old-growth trees, and on a bay where whales and seals frolic.

Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is an easy, rejuvenating and unforgettable getaway. Here's the best three-night itinerary for really getting a feel for this incredible place.

Start the adventure by spending the night at the Windsong Lodge, immersed in the temperate rainforest just outside Seward.

Day 1: Head to the Seward harbor and board the boat to Fox Island. The 12-mile trip takes you out into the heart of Resurrection Bay. You'll pull up at Fox Island and wander down the pebble beach towards the lodge. Lunch is served in the main reception area. After lunch, settle in to your private cabin. Beachcomb for heart-shaped rocks, explore the lagoon out back, pull up a chair next to the fire with a good book and take some time to slow down. Meals are served in the main lodge and focus on fresh Alaska cuisine. A glass of wine always pairs well!

Day 2: In the morning, coffee is brought to your cabin. Then, wander down to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast. There's no rush! Skip some stones and get back to that book for a while. After lunch, a three-hour sea-kayak outing is good for all levels. It's serene and stunning. You'll be back in time to indulge in a freshly prepared, Alaska-inspired meal while swapping stories with guests from around the globe in the dining room. After dinner, gather around the beach fire and admire the Midnight Sun.

Day 3: On departure day, you'll enjoy breakfast and have a few more quiet moments before boarding the boat and heading out into the mighty Gulf of Alaska. The Northwestern Fjord Tour visits three tidewater glaciers and has loads of wildlife-watching opportunities! You'll be back at the harbor in Seward in time for dinner, feeling incredibly refreshed and deeply inspired. Fox Island will stay always in your heart.
