Portage Glacier & Whittier

The central gateway to Prince William Sound is Whittier, a seaside town nestled between rugged mountains and icy glaciers, bounded by rocky shores, rainforests and glaciers. North America's largest rail and highway tunnel, the Anton Anderson Memorial, is the sole connector for those travelling by land. Whittier is a perfect basecamp for outdoor activities with its calmer waters and numerous glaciers, the opportunity for water sports such as kayaking and marine wildlife spotting are high.

Not to be missed when visiting Alaska is Portage Glacier, the most visited attraction for those travelling in Southcentral Alaska. Located in Chugach National Forest, the icy landmass can be best seen on a sightseeing Portage Glacier cruises on Portage Lake or by hiking down one of several trails leading to the glacier. Stop by the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center for interesting exhibits documenting the history of the massive ice form.
